NOT SO SECRET INVASION

So Marvel made an opening credit sequence with AI.

The studio says MONTHS worth for HISTORIC etc. etc. And sure, I'm sure the opening took months of meetings and notes. I have been through rounds of notes with major studios before and let me tell you, they love a meeting.

And hey, if you are looking for a hellish uncanny vibe I can see why you go for AI, it captures emotionless void perfectly. Its pure abyss-staring and gives truly terrible vibes.

But at this point in time, it scrapes unconsenting artists to do so.

Maybe in another couple months when artists can opt out or opt into datasets, a billion dollar creative studio can play with this shiny new toy without harming the artists who have made their legacy possible. But using gen AI right now is tone deaf and tacky and deeply uncool.

AND YET...in our saturated media market, ANY engagement is considered positive. So there is no way to complain about this that doesn't bolster their efforts to simply be more discussed and known. You can't say "look at this dog shit credit sequence" without drawing someone's attention to the show.

Social media has made outrage such a currency that the only way to protest something is to ignore it. The powerlessness of ignoring what seems most wrong to you is deeply unsettling to any healthy animal.

I am not the first to point out that social media is our time's smoking, we won't realize how much it's harmed us til we're all dying of eye tumors and rage-outs in ten years, but this to me is the most evident of its harms. That it teaches us to do nothing at all.
